Goal or purpose of position: This volunteer opportunity involves legal research and writing on a variety of topics determined by CWE’s and ALPI’s projects, initiatives and priorities. Those interested in pursuing this opportunity may be tasked with writing or collaborating with other attorneys on legal memoranda, articles, pleadings, freedom of information requests and other correspondence with agency officials. Areas of focus may include wildlife law, government transparency or malfeasance, administrative or municipal law, the Endangered Species Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act, constitutional law, tort law, and more.
Major responsibilities include (the list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Legal research and writing;
- Developing, implementing and managing a coordinated campaign;
- Serving as an ambassador for the organization and promoting a positive image/reputation of CWE.

POSITION TITLE: CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT/PSYCHOLOGY VOLUNTEER

Goal or purpose of position: This volunteer opportunity involves studying the psychological and sociological effects (and desensitization) resulting from introducing young, impressionable children to the hunting and trapping culture and encouraging them to kill. The volunteer may also focus on the marketing campaigns that seek to recruit youth hunters and normalize violence carried out by children. Those interested in pursuing this research will focus on the disciplines of psychology, sociology, and childhood development.
Major responsibilities include (the list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Research and writing;
- Development of graphics and other content for CWE’s corporate website, etc.;
- Serving as an ambassador for the organization and promoting a positive image/reputation of CWE.

Position Title: Fundraising Volunteer

Goal or purpose of position: Assist CWE in helping to raise much-needed funding to increase public awareness of the plight of wildlife. The fundraising volunteer opportunity isn’t just about raising money, but rather, it entails effectively communicating the organization’s life-saving initiatives for increasing awareness of CWE’s work while fostering long-term professional relationships. Fundraising assistance can include, but is not limited to, foundation, corporate or individual partnership building for future initiatives, securing donations, restricted gifts, grants, corporate sponsorships and/or gifts-in-kind to assist in the successful operation and growth of CWE and/or CWE’s Animal Law & Policy Institute.
Major responsibilities include (the following list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Assisting in locating and relationship-building with foundations, corporate sponsors and other financial or gift-in-kind contributors whose missions align with CWE or ALPI;
- Handling donor acknowledgements, thank you letters and charitable receipts;
- Identifying and researching donor prospects;
- Interacting with donors and conducting donor meetings;
- Developing donor materials, presentations, mailings and website content;
- Serving as an ambassador for the organization and promoting a positive image/reputation of CWE and ALPI.

POSITION TITLE: STUDENT OF ECONOMICS (OR ECONOMIST) VOLUNTEER

Goal or purpose of position: The student of economics (or economist) volunteer opportunity combines philosophical economic theories with public policy and the molding of public opinion. The goal of this position is to research/analyze the economics that drive the recreational killing of wildlife and particularly, the consumptive recreation industry, to determine the true cost of this industry to taxpayers and the moral fabric of our culture. Upon completion of the analysis, the volunteer will work closely with CWE staff to craft a white paper on this issue for publication. This volunteer opportunity will touch on the following disciplines: Economics, mathematics, statistics, communications, public policy, psychology/sociology, and graphic design.
Major responsibilities include (the following list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Closely scrutinize the current economic scheme and public policy surrounding the recreational killing of animals;
- Identifying the major recipients of the financial incentives that drive the consumptive recreation industry;
- Reviewing, organizing information and crafting the language for the white paper as well as shorter, audience-specific content for CWE’s website and/or other publications;
- Assisting in the distribution of the white paper and other publications pertaining to the economics of the recreational killing of wildlife;
- Serving as an ambassador for CWE while promoting the white paper and/or other pertinent publications.

POSITION TITLE: MATHEMATICS/STATISTICS VOLUNTEER

Goal or purpose of position: The mathematics/statistics volunteer opportunity offers opportunity to craft polling questions, utilize polling procedures and mathematical determinations based on data collected after analyzing public opinion about the proposed plan to convert state park lands to consumptive use properties (including hunting and trapping, timber harvesting and livestock grazing.) This volunteer opportunity will focus on the following disciplines: Psychology/sociology, human dimensions, statistics and sampling, polling, communications, and graphic design.
Major responsibilities include (the following list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Fostering relationships with other university departments to craft solid polling questions, determine adequate sampling sizes, devise parameters and best methodology for accurately reading and reportingdata results;
- Preparing any tools necessary for adequately gauging or interpreting responses/reactions;
- Gathering, analyzing and managing critical data collected;
- Creating visuals to explain data;
- Organizing, and compiling data into a graphic that is easily digestible for CWE’s website and/or other publications;
- Assisting in the distribution of the findings;

Goal or purpose of position: The journalism volunteer opportunity offers an opportunity to assist with analyzing government and private sector generated data pertaining to wildlife and environmental policies, practices and laws. The volunteer will also assist in determining and documenting media bias and lack of coverage for the anti-kill view point. Upon completion of the analysis, the volunteer will work closely with CWE staff to craft a white paper on this issue for publication on the website and other media outlets. This volunteer opportunity will focus on the following disciplines: Psychology, human dimensions, journalism/communications, political science and government, statistics, polling, civics/ethics, and potentially graphic design.
Major responsibilities include (the following list is not all inclusive, nor is a volunteer expected to fill all of these responsibilities):
- Keen interest in research and investigative journalism;
- Preparing questionnaires and other tools for adequately gauging advocates’ responses and reactions to the situation and one another;
- Identifying and discussing local political dynamics that encourage or compel pro-kill and pro-establishment media biases and marginalization of viewpoints in opposition to official killing policies;
- Identifying and discussing the prevalence of pseudoscience and sensationalism (“fear-mongering”) in modern journalism and the role these factors play in silencing opposition and/or creating indifference to state-sanctioned violence against wild animals;
- Interviewing, developing and managing critical information obtained from animal advocates about their beliefs, struggles and departure, if applicable, from any organized opposition;
- Reviewing, organizing information and crafting language for a white paper and miscellaneous short content for CWE’s website and/or other publications;
- Assisting in the distribution of the white paper (and any other potential publications) about the psychology that drives opponents of wildlife killing campaigns;
- Serving as an ambassador for CWE while promoting the white paper and/or other pertinent publications;
- Crafting a how-to guide on ways of overcoming anticipated obstacles to effective advocacy.

The internship also offers the opportunities to learn and use state and local public information acts, to fact-check government relations publications and press releases, and to deconstruct conventional and social media coverage of animal and environmental matters. The purpose of the project is to focus on the human dimensions/dynamics of the activists opposed to the deer kills. Upon completion of the analysis, the volunteer will work closely with CWE staff to craft a white paper on this issue for publication. This volunteer opportunity will focus on the following disciplines: Psychology, human dimensions, journalism/communications, statistics, polling, civics/ethics, and potentially graphic design.
